HILARY SHEPARD

Hilary Shepard teaches flute at Fort Hays State University. She is the Assistant Director of the High Plains Music Camp and the principal flutist for the Hays Symphony Orchestra. Originally from Niagara Falls, New York, Ms. Shepard received her Master of Music degree from Temple University and her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Houston. 

 

Hilary is an avid chamber musician and advocate for new music. Recent premiers include the Kansas premier of Phantom Miniatures (2013) for flute and clarinet by Kansas City composer Nathan Brown and the world premier of Timothy Michael Roll’s Blizzard (2015) for solo flute at the Kentucky Flute Festival, where she has been a presenter (2011) and a performer (2011, 2014 & 2015). She has collaborated with film composer John Avarese on multiple occasions and can also be heard on the soundtrack to the internationally released planetarium feature Dark Star Adventure. 

 

Hilary is also passionate about Baroque music. She has performed Vivaldi’s “Il Gardellino” and “La tempesta de mare” concertos and Telemann’s Concerto for Two Flute in A minor with the Hays Symphony Orchestra, and just this past summer she had the opportunity to perform Bach’s Cantata 94 in an actual church service as a member of the Ad Astra Music Festival’s Baroque Consort. 

 

Ms. Shepard’s primary teachers include John Thorne (Houston Symphony), Cynthia Meyers (Boston Symphony), and David Cramer (Philadelphia Orchestra).
